“I didn’t want to rationalize what I do with vague notions of emotion or artistry. My focus was purely on a structural and operational approach.”

“Music isn’t about filling space; it’s a way of passing through time.”

Oslated come archivio, piattaforma e narrazione

Jongmin Lee: “Romance, poetry, and soul.”

Romanticismo, poesia, anima.

Tre parole, nessuna spiegazione ulteriore.

🇬🇧English version

What was the motivation behind founding Oslated and Huinali Recordings?

I’ve been collecting and digging into all kinds of genres of music since my school years. I started pursuing music seriously in high school, majored in it at university, and served in a military band.

Afterward, I became fascinated with electronic music, which led me to combine DJing with some production work.

After years of activity in the Seoul scene, I visited Europe for the first time in my mid-thirties. I spent extended periods in several cities, including Berlin, experiencing a wide range of performances and local music culture firsthand, which became a profound source of inspiration for me.

What struck me most deeply was seeing people much younger than myself actively running labels, handling promotion, and organizing events to proactively build their own careers.

After returning to Korea, that inspiration led me to found my own label, and Oslated was born in 2016.

Later, to broaden our musical spectrum, I founded the sub-label Huinali Recordings. And this year, 2026, Oslated is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Was there a specific emotional or artistic void you were trying to fill?

To be honest, since I had been consistently collecting records alongside my musical activities since I was young, it wasn’t about filling a personal emotional or artistic void.

Rather, I found pure exhilaration in the process itself of discovering hidden, talented local artists in Seoul and abroad. I realized this role suited my strengths very well, and looking back objectively, I feel proud of what we’ve achieved.

I learned a valuable lesson: focusing on what you’re actually good at is far more effective than simply chasing what you like, and I applied this exact perspective to running the label.

In other words, I didn’t want to justify my work with vague notions of emotion or artistry. My focus was strictly on a structural and operational approach. This doesn’t mean standardizing the sound, but rather maintaining perfect consistency in the label’s mission and core values.

Your releases give a very visual and cinematic impression. Do visuals, landscapes, or film influence your curation?

Personally, I favor multi-layered, comprehensive art forms, but I want to give credit where it’s due for this aspect.

The visual side owes everything to our dedicated designers. Clément Davout handles Oslated’s artwork, while Javier Marimon handles Huinali Recordings’.

And on the musical side, the visual and cinematic elements are entirely thanks to the capabilities and talent of the participating artists.

My role is strictly limited to curation, which connects directly to the structural approach I mentioned earlier. The cinematic nuances that naturally follow are entirely the artists’ achievement.

That said, I take the tonal character of the mastering process very seriously. We conduct extensive research and discussion with artists to finalize the sound of each release, and consult closely with mastering engineers.

How do you usually go about discovering artists?

There’s no special method, and I have no interest in taking an authoritative stance or pretending to be overly strict. Honestly, it’s pretty much the same as any other label. I dig for music myself and reach out directly, review incoming demos and decide whether to approve them, and also take recommendations from others.

One thing worth mentioning: as a label based in Korea and East Asia, we’ve continuously made an effort since our founding to prioritize discovering talented local Korean artists first. That focus naturally expanded across Asia, and eventually worldwide.

That said, the catalogue we’ve built over the past ten years is the result of that effort. Rather than talking about grand numbers or achievements, I’d rather let the trajectory and the record itself speak for it.

How important is atmosphere compared to genre in your selection process?

Honestly, I place far more importance on what I mentioned earlier — “spectrum” — than on the word “genre.”

As for “atmosphere” or “vibe,” as time has passed and I’ve gotten older, I’ve gradually come to care less about them. These elements are highly subjective, and I don’t find much interest in defining them objectively. I’m convinced that forcing these distinctions only makes an environment closed-off and rigid.

If there’s one thing I want to emphasize about music, it’s this: “Music isn’t about filling space, but a way of passing through time.”

Do you see the label as closer to an archive, a platform, or an evolving narrative?

That’s a very sharp question, and it resonates deeply with me. I see the label as having all three of these characteristics at once, and that’s precisely what drives me to keep running it.

Simply put, rather than seeking immediate validation, I want the label to be judged by the next generation — future artists, listeners, and critics. That is what I truly hope for.

How has the underground scene around you changed in recent years?

Unfortunately, I can neither agree with nor take part in the underground scene’s tendency to settle into stagnation and mistake that for being “cool.” I’ll keep my answer to this brief.

If anything, I’d rather turn the question back to the scene: isn’t the true definition of underground PLUR — Peace, Love, Unity, Respect?

What role do you think independent radio and labels play today in building meaningful communities around music?

I believe they play an absolutely crucial role. In fact, I place independent radio and labels above everything else as my top priority.

Since I’ve already shared my thoughts on labels, I want to emphasize my deep respect for the passion and dedication of independent radio.

In an era dominated by modern streaming media, the number of people listening to radio broadcasts, in any format, is clearly declining worldwide. Even so, I believe the romance that radio offers is truly beautiful and noble.

Specifically, one of our missions is to support music-related departments at universities worldwide, as well as radio stations, and by extension, university students themselves. I’ve always been deeply inspired by the story of the rock band R.E.M., who gained widespread popularity across the US through continuous airplay on college radio stations and organic word of mouth. I firmly believe that the tastes and passions of university students continue to play a decisive role in shaping the future of music.

Are there any cities, scenes, or cultural movements that inspire you most right now?

Since I’m Korean and based in Korea, and the label’s roots are here as well, I’m always monitoring, researching, and analyzing the Korean market, including the Seoul scene.

Beyond that, it’s Japan’s cultural and artistic scene, including Tokyo, which I’ve always respected and, honestly, envied at the same time.

As for cultural movements, going into that would make this answer far too long, so I’d like to keep it brief. I believe most of my thoughts on that have already been covered above.

What are you currently searching for in music that you feel is becoming increasingly rare?

Romance, poetry, and soul.

Jongmin Lee, Oslated.

🇰🇷Korean version

(Soul).

Jongmin Lee, Oslated.
